Introduction to estabishment of HKCPMA:

The World Health Organization has research studies done showing that mood disorders will
become the second most common chronic illness of the world in year 2020.

In United Kingdom, mental health has been regarded as one of the four main health care plans
of utmost importance in year 2000.

As a result,Hong Kong Univeristy Family Medicine Unit(FMU) and Psychiatry department has
jointly organisede various activities to increase the knowledge and alertness of Hong Kong
doctors and people towards mental health issues.

One of these steps was the establishment of the HKU Postgraduate diploma course in
community psychological medicine(PDipCommPsyMed)in the year 2003.
This diploma course lasts for one year, which includes important topics on community
psychological medicine(via lectures),as well as clinical attachment to various HA Psychiatric
hospitals(like Queen Mary/Castle Peak/Kwai Chung hospitals,etc).
It is the aim of setting up the Hong Kong Community Psyhological Medical Association to further
increase public awareness of the importance of community psychological medicine amongst the
Hong Kong people.
